What comes next. Imagining a post-COVID-19 world.

Maybe because I’m a writer but whatever happens, I can never stop positing as to what comes next. Where does the story go. What is the narrative arc.

I find myself doing that during the COVID-19 pandemic. Experts say there will be spikes and valleys and this will be the new normal for a couple of years.

Then what? I’m betting overtourism won’t be a problem for a while. I’m betting a lot of commercial real estate will sit empty, or maybe be converted to residential units as zoning laws change. I’m betting AirBnB rules are changed. I’m betting teleworking is here to stay and big malls are not. I’m hoping we change how we think about the elderly and how we pay “essential workers”. I know that many will exploit this to prey on the weak and plant division and settle old scores.

I also know that we won’t know how this has impacted our lives irrevocably for a generation….maybe longer.

Your predictions?

My big fear is that little or nothing will change. We’ll go straight back to overconsumption times 10. You know politics will be the right screaming that the left spent us to oblivion and blah, blah, blah. I HOPE you are right. You should be right. We’ll see, soon enough.
